Quarter 2 Insights: Where 4/20 Meets Science
As we head into Quarter 2, 4/20 is a reminder that cannabis is more than culture—it’s science. This season, Fidelity Diagnostics is spotlighting the processes, people, and standards that make safe, reliable testing possible, while sharing updates and insights to help you plan confidently for the months ahead.
This is just our second edition, but you can always stay in touch with us by reviewing our monthly newsletters here and subscribe to stay up to date throughout all 2026.
Celebrate 4/20 With Science: What It Really Means—and What It Takes to Get There
When people hear “4/20,” the associations are often cultural, casual, or symbolic. At Fidelity Diagnostics, we see 4/20 through a different lens: one rooted in science, standards, and the systems that protect consumers and producers alike.
This is an opportunity to celebrate not just cannabis, but the science behind it, the people who make safe, compliant testing possible, and the work that continues long after the calendar flips past April 20.
Lessons From FiDi: Breaking Down the Lab Process
While 4/20 has become shorthand for cannabis culture, the modern industry is defined less by folklore and more by data, repeatability, and regulation. Today’s cannabis market depends on validated testing methods, calibrated instrumentation, and documented processes that ensure products are safe, consistent, and accurately labeled.
One of the most misunderstood parts of cannabis testing is how much happens before a result is reported.
In simple terms:
- Samples must be homogenized so results reflect the whole product, not just one portion.
- Instruments must be calibrated and verified daily to ensure accuracy.
- Methods are validated to confirm they perform consistently across different matrices and concentrations.
Testing isn’t about chasing a number—it’s about understanding why that number is defensible.
On 4/20, it’s worth remembering that the credibility of the industry depends on the science that supports it.
Why Testing Matters More Than Ever

As markets mature, expectations rise. Consumers want transparency. Regulators want consistency. Producers need results they can plan around.
Reliable testing supports:
- Accurate labeling
- Consumer safety
- Operational planning

Science is what turns cannabis from a product of culture into a product of confidence.
Industry & Legislative Updates: Staying Informed

FIDELITY PRICING
Across the country, cannabis testing labs are experiencing increased costs tied to instrumentation, compliance requirements, and operational infrastructure.
Over the past year, Fidelity worked intentionally to hold pricing steady as long as possible, absorbing costs wherever feasible. As part of maintaining the systems required for reliable testing, select pricing adjustments were implemented following the notice emailed to all clients on March 24, 2026. If you did not receive that email, please let us know ASAP.
These updates support:
- Investment in redundant instrumentation to prevent downtime
- Retention of highly trained scientific personnel
- Ongoing service contracts and calibration requirements

TURNAROUND TIME PROGRESS
We’re proud to share a major milestone: Fidelity is now consistently achieving a 7–10 business day turnaround.
In many cases, results are returning closer to 5–7 days, but we are maintaining a 7–10-day expectation to ensure we can deliver that consistency—especially as we move into the increased demand around events and holidays, such as 4/20.
This reflects:
- Expanded capacity
- Process improvements
- Continued investment in infrastructure
Thank you for your patience as we’ve worked toward this milestone; we’re committed to continuing that progress.

UPCOMING LAW CHANGE: 5MG SERVING SIZE (EFFECTIVE JULY 1)
A recent update from the Montana Cannabis & Alcohol Regulation Division clarified an important upcoming change:
All ingestible products must move from a 10mg serving size to a 5mg serving size by July 1.
Key clarification:
- This requirement is tied to package creation and testing
- Sell-through of non-compliant products will NOT be allowed after July 1
- This is a significant operational shift—particularly for:
- Beverages
- Edibles
- Tinctures
- Chocolate and multi-serving ingestibles
In addition, current guidance indicates that existing packages may be relabeled to reflect the milligrams change from 10 to 5, effective July 1.
Recommendation: Start planning product transitions now, especially for slower-moving inventory, to avoid disruption as the deadline approaches.
Additional Insights from the March CARD Newsletter
Based on guidance from the Montana Cannabis Division, here are a few additional reminders:
- Compliance is increasingly tied to how products are packaged, not just labeled
- Planning ahead is critical as rule changes approach enforcement dates
- Inventory strategy will play a major role in avoiding product loss

Summer at Fidelity: Planning Ahead
As summer approaches, we encourage clients to plan early around known closures and seasonal considerations:
Upcoming Holidays
- Memorial Day—Monday
- Labor Day—Monday
We’ll continue to communicate any schedule updates clearly and in advance.

Warm-Weather Testing Tips

Heat impacts more than comfort. It can affect product integrity. As temperatures rise:
- Store samples appropriately
- Submit promptly after sampling
- Communicate early about pickups
- Stay hydrated (seriously—everyone benefits)
And yes, we also encourage you to wear sunscreen and get outside when you can!
